Artist's Statement:

My fascination with ancient forms of communication runs deep. For the past two years interests in language and the origin of written forms has taken me on a amazing and interesting path. Research led me in both book and on the internet to cave paintings in Spain and France, petroglyphs in Australia and the Americas, clay tablets in the Middle East, early forms of calligraphy in Asia and India and wood carvings in Africa. The list goes on, as far back as the first written language. Seeing archeological finds in museums and the sense of wonder that accompanies viewing them was the catylist for creating these works.

Early written texts were created mainly for religious purposes (paintings, petroglyphs) but as time went on, symbols and text became necessary for counting, making lists, marking territories and basic communication between parties. The forms vary on each continent and range from chipping away rock to civilized calligraphy done with inks and brushes on hand-made paper. The veil of history fascinates: to think that as time passes, languages in use for hundreds of years suddenly disappear. The original communicators die off or adopt a new language. Yet the abandoned texts remain, shrouded in dust or buried in earth, keeping their secrets.

I hope to derive from these ancient forms an aura of antiquity, style and mystery, combining their past historic purpose with a current artful one. The overall feeling conveyed by their age and the resulting look achieved by utilizing letterforms in an abstract fashion are my primary goals. I hope viewers enjoy these works and remain open to the possible journeys they can provide.
