This concept was developed after spending some time sketching and thinking of ways to give urban and suburban wildlife more habitat. The removal of habitat for wildlife is becoming the norm in the face of development.
This concept has large, interlocking ceramic pieces which form a narrow pyramid with holes and entries on many levels for a variety of wildlife to inhabit. The shape will naturally shed water while giving shelter to anything inside. The inner sides of the structure would be very rough, in order to give birds or insects a good surface to nest in. The entries would be large enough for small mammals but not large enough for children or dogs.
Each piece would made from slabs and be fired separately since most kilns can't handle anything larger. There would be a very thin glaze applied to the outside to protect it from absorbing moisture and later being damaged from low temperatures. However, the surface texture would be rough to accomodate any plant life that could affix itself to the surface.
When it is built full size, many insects, birds and other animals might share it or utilize it alone. The pyramids could be placed in a variety of parks and other outdoor areas and would weather to a natural color over time.
